This month we focus on values in leadership: identifying your values and deciding by them. Physicians make difficult decisions every day, and clinical training supplies a playbook for many of them, but leadership decisions (e.g., allocating scarce resources, responding when policy and patient need collide, or dealing with disruptive physicians) rarely come with one. In those moments, personal core values act as a compass that points one in the right direction for decision-making purposes. Most of us have only an intuitive sense of our values, but deliberately identifying and internalizing them allows us to make sound decisions in a more meaningful and impactful way.
