Pennsylvania Medical Society Statement on Measles-Associated Deaths

The Pennsylvania Medical Society (PAMED) today expressed serious concern following the Pennsylvania Department of Health's confirmation of two measles-associated deaths, the first deaths linked to the disease in the Commonwealth in 35 years.

These deaths underscore the serious risks posed by measles, a highly contagious disease that can lead to severe complications and death. According to the Department of Health, both individuals were unvaccinated.

Vaccination remains the safest and most effective way to prevent measles. Two doses of the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine provide approximately 97% lifetime protection against the disease.

PAMED strongly supports vaccination and other evidence-based public health measures. The Society remains concerned about recent changes to the childhood immunization schedule that could contribute to declining vaccination rates and increase the risk of preventable disease outbreaks.
