In-Office Medication Dispensing

Last Updated

Oct 8, 2026, 11:00 AM

In Pennsylvania, physicians are generally permitted to dispense medications to patients under their care so long as they comply with state and federal requirements. In-office medication dispensing benefits patients by ensuring timely, same-day access to prescribed treatments. Additionally, in-office dispensing enables physicians to more effectively manage and coordinate patient care by monitoring compliance and addressing potential treatment issues more efficiently.

Pennsylvania Medical Society is making this In-Office Medication Dispensing Policy available as a general resource. This policy applies only to dispensing of noncontrolled medications and is not intended to address every state and federal requirement that may apply to a particular medication. Additional requirements may apply.

The information provided in this policy is not intended as, nor should it be construed as, legal advice. Any practice that intends to implement an in-office dispensing policy should work with its own legal counsel and office manager/compliance officer to ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
