PAMED Requests Changes to Proposed Regulations on Mental Health Evaluations for Law Enforcement

Recently, Pennsylvania Medical Society (PAMED) submitted comments on the Municipal Police Officers’ Education and Training Commission’s (Commission) proposed regulations on Chapter 261a (relating to law enforcement mental health evaluations).

PAMED recognizes the proposed regulations represent a positive step forward by expanding access to mental health care for law enforcement officers, enabling them to obtain mental health evaluations from mental health professionals and treatment from licensed physicians for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), at no cost to the officer. To assist with the proposed rulemaking, PAMED requests that the Commission revise its proposed definition of “licensed physician”, as the proposed definition, as drafted, raises significant concerns.
