For the first time in its 178-year history, the Pennsylvania Medical Society (PAMED) has elected a woman to serve as Chair of its Board of Trustees. Lorraine Rosamilia, MD, a board-certified dermatologist from Centre County, PA, will lead the organization’s governing body.
Dr. Rosamilia has been an active PAMED member for 14 years and currently serves as a delegate to the American Medical Association. Throughout her career, she has been a strong advocate for patients and for the practice of medicine at both the state and federal levels.
Reflecting on being elected, Dr. Rosamilia said, “Women as physicians are not outliers in medicine anymore and this position won’t be either. To truly trust someone in leadership hopefully means that they’ve earned people’s respect because of their valuable interactions and decision-making abilities, no matter if they are male or female or otherwise, and I am proud of that.”
Dr. Rosamilia earned her undergraduate degree in biology from the University of Richmond. She completed her medical degree, internal medicine internship, and dermatology residency at Penn State at the Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.
Looking ahead to her term as Chair, she emphasized her commitment to serving PAMED’s members and their patients. “My goals in this position aren’t mine. I aim to respond to and act on the here and now first and ensure that PAMED will be at the table. Our playbook includes our membership needs and the needs of their patients, our policies set forth by our organization, but also our core values as doctors.”
