Can CME hours credited for ACLS  be counted in the patient safety/ risk management requirement?

    Dr Sandra Eglick Harkavy

Thank you for your question related to the opioid training requirement for licensure renewal 2017/2018.  Prescribers who do not maintain an active DEA are exempt from opioid training as stated in PAMED's FAQ: State CME Licensure Requirements for MDs.  Link to website article: https://www.pamedsoc.org/detail/article/MD-CME-requirements

Exemptions for prescribers who do not have their own DEA registration number — For physicians seeking re-licensure, the two-hour CME requirement does not apply to a prescriber who 1) is exempt from the Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) requirements for registration under its applicable laws and regulations, as well as any state law; and 2) does not use the registration of another person or entity as permitted by law to prescribe controlled substances in any manner. The exemption applies unless a physician has a DEA registration number or prescribes under another individual or entity’s DEA registration number.

    Thank you.

NI know that you need child abuse one of the above has addressed requirements for retired license. I know that you need to do child abuse requirement, but how about retired physician who does not have DEA number and only prescribes unrestricted drugs for self or family- do we still have to get opiod CME for renewal? I cannot find this anywhere in the data of medical society. would appreciate as timely and accurate answer.

Dr. Rowe, while you are correct in that complaints could trigger an audit, the focus of this article was the license renewal process and not the complaint process.

The audits are not entirely random.  If any complaint is made to the State Board of Medicine, with or without basis, plan on your CME log being audited.

pa medical society should petition the licensure board to require medical society membership as part of renewal application requirement.
