(Harrisburg, Pa. – 5/15/18) Melissa Pugliano-Mauro MD, a dermatologist with UPMC St. Margaret, has been named May’s Everyday Hero by the Pennsylvania Medical Society (PAMED).
Nominated by physician-colleague Geoffrey Lim MD, Dr. Pugliano-Mauro was described as “selfless.” Dr. Lim listed multiple examples as part of the nomination including the work she did to develop lectureships, fundraisers, and fellowships. Dr. Lim also applauded Dr. Pugliano-Mauro for her effort in developing the Center for Solid Organ Transplant Related Skin Disease as well as for her role as a Dermatology Residency Program Director and Micrographic Surgery and Cutaneous Oncology Fellowship Director.
“Dr. Pugliano-Mauro is simply incredible,” says Dr. Lim. “I don’t know how she does it all, and all the while maintains a positive attitude. She’s a passionate teacher and nurturing mentor who continues to make a lasting impact on our department and our community.
Theodore Christopher, MD, president of the Pennsylvania Medical Society who practices emergency medicine in Philadelphia, believes Dr. Pugliano-Mauro exemplifies what a good doctor should be and the art of medicine.
“Clearly, Dr. Pugliano-Mauro is a physician who goes above and beyond for patients and colleagues,” he says. “PAMED thanks her for everything she does and is honored to present this award to her.”
PAMED’s Everyday Hero Award is designed to showcase talented physicians who probably don’t view themselves as heroes, but to patients and colleagues they are. The award is a monthly member honor with nominations coming from patients, caregivers, and medical professionals.
Dr. Pugliano-Mauro, who practices at UPMC St. Margaret, is the first recipient from Pittsburgh to win the award. She was selected from a statewide pool of nominations.
She will formally be presented the award by PAMED on May 23 at 8:30 a.m. A brief ceremony will be held at her office located at 2585 Freeport Road, Suite, 204, Harmar, Pa.
