February Board of Trustee Meeting Wrap Up

Last Updated: Feb 8, 2024

Last week, the Pennsylvania Medical Society’s Board of Trustees held their February meeting, virtually.

The Board approved James D. Latronica, DO to fill the vacant position of At-Large Specialties Trustee. Dr. Latronica specializes in family medicine and addiction medicine in the Pittsburgh area and has previously served on the board as an Early Career Physician Trustee. His term ends December 2024.

After thoughtful discussion, the Board approved the development of an amicus brief in support of St. Luke’s Hospital, appellees, seeking affirmation of a Superior Court decision by the PA Supreme Court. An amicus brief is a document filed with a court by an individual or group who is not a party to the case to assist the court in reaching its decision by providing expertise, information or perspective in support of one side of the case. The American Medical Association will likely provide financial support to cover the cost of the brief.

President Kristen Sandel, MD shared that, via her duties as President, Martin Raniowski, PAMED CEO and Executive Vice President, and she met with the leadership of the Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania (HAP) to discuss an ongoing partnership on a variety of concerns where it makes sense. As the Chair of the Emergency Department Overcrowding Task Force, Dr. Sandel specifically addressed mutual issues that may be of interest. The Board was presented with an update on PAMED’s strategic plan. One objective that has taken shape is developing job descriptions for volunteer committee positions. These descriptions outline the tasks so that any member interested in fulfilling a position is fully aware of the time and expectations involved in the role. The goal is to share this information widely to encourage knowledge and participation.

Finally, the 2024 nominees for the Top Physicians Under 40, Distinguished Service Award, and Physician Award for Voluntary International Service, were approved by The Board. We’re excited to announce the great news soon!
