There was a recent JAMA publication that examined cost and care quality differences between physicians and hospitals in and outside a health system. It was a robust study pulling Medicare and IRS data. The conclusion was that there was a marginal increase in clinical quality and patient experience with integrated health systems but at “substantially” increased costs of care.
