State Board of Osteopathic Medicine Changes Back-Up Supervisory Physician Policy

Last Updated: Dec 20, 2016

On Dec. 14, 2016, the Pennsylvania State Board of Osteopathic Medicine voted to reduce the number of back-up supervisors that must be reported to the Board for physician assistants.

Moving forward, an application will only have to list the primary supervisory physician and one back-up. If there are more back-up supervisory physicians, the facility will have to maintain that list and produce it upon demand by the Board. The Osteopathic Board's new policy now aligns with the State Board of Medicine's current policy on back-up supervisory physicians.

Previous policy required applications to list the primary supervising physician and all back-up supervisory physicians, regardless of the number of back-ups that would include.

The Osteopathic Board is developing new application forms, and the forms are expected to be available in January 2017. Any questions can be directed to the State Board of Osteopathic Medicine at (717) 783-4858 or
