MSS Governing Council Roles

What is the Medical Student Section (MSS) Governing Council?
The MSS Governing Council is meant to provide medical students with a voice within PAMED and allow them to give guidance on developing future programs/resources and how PAMED can assist in advocacy issues.

How You Can Become Involved
Students will be elected to the following positions at the Medical Student Section's annual meeting in October 2017. This event is part of PAMED’s House of Delegates in Hershey. Each of these positions are 1-year terms (see description of each position below).

In addition to these positions, each of Pennsylvania's 10 medical schools appoints a representative to serve on the PAMED MSS Governing Council.

Chair
Requirements/Responsibilities:

  • Presides over all MSS Council meetings, typically 8-10 conference calls per year
  • Usually serves as vice chair for 1 year before assuming this role
  • Shall vote in the case of a tie
  • Attends AMA’s Medical Student Section meeting on behalf of PAMED in June and November
  • Must attend PAMED’s House of Delegates in October to preside over annual Medical Student Section meeting, where he/she will lead discussion on resolutions and make sure each adopted resolution is acted upon
  • Works with PAMED staff to develop election materials for the following year’s MSS meeting at the House of Delegates
  • Must be a current medical student in Pennsylvania

Vice Chair
Requirements/Responsibilities:

  • Plays a lead role in running MSS Council meetings, typically 8-10 conference calls per year
  • Attends AMA’s Medical Student Section meeting on behalf of PAMED in June and November
  • Must attend PAMED’s House of Delegates in October to preside over annual Medical Student Section meeting, where he/she would lead discussion of resolutions if MSS chair is absent
  • Must be a current medical student in Pennsylvania

Medical Student Trustee
Requirements/Responsibilities:

  • Attends PAMED Board of Trustee meetings and functions
  • Generally services as Medical Student Trustee-Elect for 1 year before assuming this role
  • Participates on MSS Governing Council conference calls and updates MSS Council on PAMED Board actions
  • Mentors current Medical Student Trustee-Elect
  • Must be a current medical student in Pennsylvania

Medical Student Trustee-Elect
Requirements/Responsibilities:

  • Attends PAMED Board of Trustee meetings and functions as an observer to learn more about the position and support the Medical Student Trustee
  • Participates on MSS Governing Council conference calls and updates MSS Council on PAMED Board actions if the Medical Student Trustee is absent
  • Must be a current medical student in Pennsylvania

Past Chair
Requirements/Responsibilities:

  • MSS Chair automatically becomes Past Chair for the next year
  • Mentors current MSS Chair
  • Must be a current medical student in Pennsylvania
  • Participates on MSS Governing Council conference calls

AMA Alternate Delegate
Requirements/Responsibilities:

  • Must be a current medical student in Pennsylvania
  • Participates on MSS Governing Council conference calls
  • Attends AMA meeting in June and November as part of PAMED’s Delegation
  • Mentors medical student who serves as AMA Alternate Delegate-Elect

AMA Alternate Delegate-Elect
Requirements/Responsibilities:

  • Must be a current medical student in Pennsylvania
  • Participates on MSS Governing Council conference calls
  • Attends AMA meeting in June and November as an observer to learn more about the position

PAMPAC Representative
Requirements/Responsibilities:

  • Represents medical students on PAMED’s Political Action Committee – also known as PAMPAC
  • Attends PAMED PAMPAC meetings and functions
  • Must be a current medical student in Pennsylvania
  • Participates on MSS Governing Council conference calls to update members on PAMPAC activities and initiatives

Foundation Student Trustee

  • Attends Foundation trustee meetings in person or by phone
  • Interested in learning and understanding Foundation programs

Philadelphia County Medical Society Rep

  • Represents students on the PCMS Board of Directors
  • Participates in as Philadelphia County delegate at PAMED's House of Delegates

School Representative

  • Each of Pennsylvania's medical schools gets one representative on its governing council; this representative can also serve as one of the officer positions above
  • Represents the MSS Council at any school function that PAMED seeks to attend (example: new student activities fair)
  • Works with PAMED staff to identify opportunities for member recruitment at their school
  • Participates on MSS Governing Council conference calls to share perspective on potential advocacy or resource development opportunities that would appeal to medical students
