The PA House Health Committee held a public hearing on Monday to hear testimony on COVID-19 treatment options and to discuss the merits of House Bill 1741. HB 1741 would prohibit medical and osteopathic licensing boards from disciplining physicians who prescribe “off-label” medications for the treatment of COVID-19.
The bill would also require pharmacists to fill FDA approved drugs for off-label treatment of COVID-19 without fear of punishment from their licensing board. PAMED will continue to monitor the status of HB 1741.
I encourage all physicians to review the testimony to the committee. It is disgraceful that the committee called 3 physicians, all practicing outside of mainstream medicine, who espoused unsubstantiated and often blatantly false information. Only Rep. Frankel(Allegheny) stood up against the false narrative the majority members of the committee was driven to pursue. A truly embarrassing example of responsible governance.
