Member Voice: “Never Lose Sight of the Patient as the Center of What We Do Every Day”

The Pennsylvania Medical Society recently caught up with Alyssa Moyer, MD, to talk about her experience with PAMED's Year-Round Leadership Academy. Dr. Moyer was awarded an Early Career Physicians Scholarship to participate in the 2015-2016 session.

PAMED: Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your role as a physician leader at WellSpan?
Dr. Moyer: I am a native of the Washington, D.C., area who has made Pennsylvania home since meeting my husband as first-year students at Jefferson Medical College. After completing my Internal Medicine Residency at Hershey Medical Center, I joined WellSpan, spending the majority of my clinical life as a Hospitalist. I am currently the Chair of the Department of Medicine at WellSpan York Hospital and the Chief Medical Officer at WellSpan Surgery and Rehabilitation Hospital.

PAMED: Why did you decide to participate in PAMED's Year-Round Leadership Academy?
Dr. Moyer: I sought to participate in the PAMED Year-Round Leadership Academy to meet and learn from physicians from other areas of state with a similar passion for improving the quality of care for our patients. The Academy's curriculum provided both a broad overview of germane topics as well as specific tools to help me grow in my ability to lead my peers.

PAMED: How have you been able to apply what you learned during the Year-Round Leadership Academy?
Dr. Moyer: Lessons of the Academy are applicable in my everyday practice, especially the tools to lead teams and resolve conflict. The program's partnership with the American Association of Physician Leadership is a nice additive feature of the Academy, giving concise overviews of areas as diverse as health care finance and strategic thinking while gaining continuing education credit.

PAMED: Why is it important for physicians to take on leadership roles within their health care organizations?
Dr. Moyer: Physician-led health care organizations are effective and patient-centered. The perspective of a physician leader is grounded to never lose sight of the patient as the center of the what we do every day.
