Welcome to 2019! I hope you and your family had a very happy holiday season.
2018 was a year in which the Pennsylvania Medical Society (PAMED) focused on helping you return to the Art of Medicine.
From stopping several scope of practice bills (e.g. CRNPs attempt to gain independent practice) and cookie-cutter medicine proposals (e.g. legislation that could have mandated physicians comply with prescribing guidelines that are currently voluntary, with a regulatory process that doesn’t allow for timely updates as medicine advances), to moving the needle on legislation related to Physician Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment (POLST), telemedicine, and prior authorization reform, PAMED worked to keep bureaucrats out of the exam room and physicians with their patients.
In 2019, we’ll continue our efforts to get you back to your art of medicine - whether that is through strong advocacy with key decision makers and legislators in Harrisburg, answering your questions through PAMED’s Knowledge Center staff and providing relevant products, services, and education – PAMED is your partner.
I want to make sure you’re aware of a recent proposed rule that could expand the possible venues where a medical liability action can be initiated in the state. If the rule is adopted, this could lead to higher premiums for medical liability insurance and make Pennsylvania a less attractive place for physicians to practice. There is something physicians can do about it – I strongly encourage you to submit comments on the proposed changes before the Feb. 22 comment deadline. There is strength in numbers. We need as many physicians and other health care practitioners to respond as possible. Get details and take action here.
I welcome your input on how we can better serve our members and help you return to the Art of Medicine. Feel free to reach out to me any time at email@example.com with ideas, questions, or concerns.
Thank you for being a member. Best wishes for a happy and healthy New Year!
