New CPT Code Created for Additional Costs During Public Health Emergency

Last Updated: Sep 30, 2020

In September 2020, the American Medical Association (AMA) announced that a new CPT code 99072 was approved for use when reporting additional expenses incurred during a public health emergency (PHE).

In its CPT Assistant publication, the AMA defines when to use code 99072 as follows:

Additional supplies, materials, and clinical staff time over and above those usually included in an office visit or other non-facility service(s), when performed during a Public Health Emergency as defined by law, due to respiratory-transmitted infectious disease

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has not yet confirmed whether it will cover the use of CPT code 99072. Eligibility for payment will depend upon the coverage policies determined by each specific insurer. It is recommended that you reach out to the insurers you work with to determine their policies for the new code.

The Pennsylvania Medical Society (PAMED) will continue to watch for updates about the new code and we will share any new information as it becomes available.
