US Department of HHS releases proposed rule on Standard for Electronic Signatures

Last Updated: Jan 18, 2023

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) will issue a proposed rule to support heath care claims and prior authorization transactions and propose a standard for electronic signatures to be used in health care attachments transactions. The proposed rule is available to review here, and the deadline to submit comments is March 21, 2023.

HHS is proposing these new standards for Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) covered entities including health plans, health care clearing houses and health care providers who electronically transmit any health information in connection with transactions for which HHS has adopted standards. The proposed rule, if finalized, is estimated to save $454 million annually, significantly reducing provider burden and empowering health care providers to focus on providing direct patient care.
