LifeGuard Quality of Care Assessment and Recommendations for Remediation

LifeGuard provides medical licensure boards and healthcare organizations with physician quality of care assessment services to help address potential issues. The program uses several clinical standard of care assessment tools to measure clinical competence, such as decision-making skills and medical knowledge.

Why Are Clinical Standard of Care Assessment Services Needed?

The monitoring and measurement of healthcare quality are critical, but quantifying quality can be extremely challenging and complex. There is no single method that works in every situation. LifeGuard assessments are custom designed for individuals, typically consisting of independent medical examinations, neurocognitive exams, peer review and much more.

The goal of LifeGuard is to enhance the quality of medical care provided throughout the state of Pennsylvania. We are committed to providing medical licensure boards and healthcare organizations and physicians with the resources they need should issues occur.

What to Expect During an Assessment of Clinical Quality of Care

Every situation is different, but there are a few components of quality of care assessments that share some similarities. Those who utilize the quality of care service line can expect a review of medical records, simulated chart recall with a peer reviewer, and in some cases a simulation exercise.  Participants typically undergo screening tests that examine reaction time, memory and other neurocognitive functions. A proctor may observe participants to determine their judgment, skill and clinical knowledge related to standard of care.

When the assessment is finished, the LifeGuard team will analyze the collected information and provide a detailed report of their findings. This report will describe opportunities where the physician can improve and will detail his or her strengths and weaknesses. When areas of improvement are identified, a thorough rationale will be provided.

LifeGuard can assist the physician with a plan to address the issues if they want to continue with the program. Peer to peer mentoring is available for physicians who would like to have ongoing guidance to ensure that they have successfully implemented the change recommendation to assure quality of care.

All findings are strictly confidential and will be shared only with authorized parties.
