HARRISBURG, PA — Blair County Medical Society (BCMS) awarded a $1,000 scholarship to local medical student Adam Weaver, son of Douglass and Janelle Weaver, DO, of Duncansville, Pa. He attends Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, Philadelphia.
Weaver said that throughout his life, he has been fascinated by how the human body works, which has driven him to pursue a career in medicine. He said his life has been impacted in major ways by not only the marvels of modern medicine but also by its unintended failures. Weaver said, "My brother and I were born four months premature and his life was taken by the horrible complications we faced. I was fortunate enough to survive and now use his death as one of my greatest sources of motivation."
Weaver, whose mother is an osteopathic family physician in an underserved area, said "I see firsthand the long hours, the nights on-call, and the sacrifice given to patients in the office and at the hospital. I also see what is necessary to keep pace with all the regulations, quality initiatives, technologies, and other challenges that a physician must meet."
He said of his professional goals, "I hope to advance the knowledge of today and expand it to meet tomorrow's challenges. I will continue my strive to achieve my full potential and commit myself to defeating the diseases and complications that have taken countless lives, all while motivated by those that almost took mine."
This scholarship is made possible by a $50,000 contribution from the Blair County Medical Society (BCMS) which established the fund within the Foundation to assist local students with the cost of attending a U.S. medical school.
