Doctors urge Pennsylvanians to wear masks to slow the spread of COVID-19

Last Updated: Jul 2, 2020

The following is from Lawrence John, MD, president of the Pennsylvania Medical Society (PAMED):

“The recent resurgence of COVID-19 in other states should serve as a reminder to Pennsylvanians that this pandemic is far from finished. We need to remain vigilant and continue to follow guidelines released from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

lawrence-john-thumbnailThe Pennsylvania Medical Society (PAMED) believes CDC guidelines offer the most effective way to slow the spread of COVID-19. An important part of these guidelines includes wearing masks, or face coverings, in public when other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain.

COVID-19 spreads mainly from respiratory droplets when people come within approximately 6 feet of each other. Evidence is emerging that masks reduce the spray of respiratory droplets when worn over the nose and mouth.

Many physicians in outpatient settings continue to face dangerous shortages of personal protective equipment. This threatens their ability to safely stay open should another surge of COVID-19 appear in the commonwealth.

We need all Pennsylvanians to do their part to ensure this does not happen.”
