Last Updated: Dec 17, 2018

(HARRISBURG, Pa. – 12/17/18) James Powell, MD, a pediatric hematologist/oncologist from State College, Pa., has been named December’s Everyday Hero by the Pennsylvania Medical Society (PAMED).

James-Powell-MD-Everyday-HeroPAMED’s Everyday Hero Award is designed to showcase talented physicians who probably don’t view themselves as heroes, but to patients and colleagues they are. The award is a monthly member honor.

PAMED and state Rep. Kerry Benninghoff presented Dr. Powell with the award on Dec. 11.

Rep. Benninghoff, who nominated Dr. Powell for the award, described him as “very kind and compassionate.”

“I am very honored to have nominated Dr. James Powell for the PA Medical Society's Everyday Hero Award,” Rep. Benninghoff said. “He is an extremely kind and empathetic person, and in return a tremendous physician. Our family is forever grateful for the loving care he gave our daughter.”

Dr. Powell earned his medical degree from Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. After completing a pediatric residency at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children in Philadelphia and a fellowship at Duke University Medical Center in pediatric hematology/oncology, he returned to Penn State to work in the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology.

During that time, Dr. Powell was instrumental in starting a sickle cell disease clinic. He also spent time working with several satellite clinics, including Mount Nittany Medical Center in State College.

Dr. Powell was hired by Centre Medical and Surgical Associates (now Mount Nittany Physician Group) in 2008 as a pediatric hematologist/oncologist and general pediatrician. He also sees patients for the CANCER CARE PARTNERSHIP, a partnership between Mount Nittany Health and Penn State Cancer Institute.

In addition to his clinical duties, Dr. Powell also serves as an associate professor of pediatrics at Penn State College of Medicine, where he was chosen as Teacher of the Year in 2017.
