Wilkes-Barre, Allentown Physicians Added to PAMED Board

(Harrisburg, Pa. – 3/4/19) Two physicians were recently appointed by the Pennsylvania Medical Society’s (PAMED) Board of Trustees to fill vacant seats: 
Maria-Escano-MDMaria Escano, MD, a trauma surgeon and surgical intensivist practicing in Wilkes-Barre, will serve until October 2019 as PAMED’s 12th District Trustee. In this position, Dr. Escano will represent physician members from Bradford, Susquehanna, Sullivan, Wyoming, and Luzerne counties.
Dr. Escano is a quality improvement and patient-systems safety advocate who currently practices at Intermountain Medical Group. She is also president of the American Trauma Foundation and developed the Co-Co Project – A community-corporate partnership built on compassion to improve career opportunities, business education and sustainability of various impoverished communities.
Dr. Escano obtained her medical degree at the University of Miami School of Medicine and post-graduate training at Columbia University/New York Presbyterian Hospital and St. Agnes Hospital. Dr. Escano also completed a fellowship at the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland.  
Madalyn-Schaefgen-MDMadalyn Schaefgen, MD, a family medicine physician from Allentown, will serve until October 2019 as PAMED’s Primary Care Trustee.
Dr. Schaefgen has been active in organized medicine at the state and national level. She served as president of the Pa. Academy of Family Physicians and currently represents Pennsylvania as a delegate to the American Academy of Family Physicians Congress.
She is passionate about improving immunization rates in Pa., streamlining electronic health record documentation, and raising the next generation of family physicians.
After earning her medical degree from Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Dr. Schaefgen completed her residency in family medicine from Sacred Heart Hospital in Allentown. She served in the U.S. Air Force before returning to Allentown, where she currently practices at LVPG Family Medicine and teaches medical students.
