Erie Doctor Dedicated to Continuing Education
Chris Clark, DO, has fully embraced the motto, “Never stop learning.”
“I’m involved in all levels of medical education—from medical students to senior staff,” Dr. Clark said.
In addition to seeing patients at St. Vincent Family Medicine in Erie, Dr. Clark is director of continuing medical education at St. Vincent Health Center and teaches in the family medicine residency program there.
As CME director, he organizes all CME at the hospital—from grand rounds to annual conferences in different specialties to enduring materials like journal activities.
“We’re doing a lot more CME here than we used to. It’s become a big part of the job,” Dr. Clark said.
“A lot of physicians travel out of town to the nicer weather areas to attend their CME activities, but for local physicians looking for local opportunities, we’re a great resource,” he added.
But Dr. Clark doesn’t just arrange CME activities—he attends them.
“I like being brought up to date on evidence-based approaches to care of patients,” he said.
After doing site surveys of organizations seeking CME accreditation for the Pennsylvania Medical Society for the past several years, he recently joined the Society’s Commission on Continuing Medical Education, which oversees the Society’s CME programs and accredits other CME providers.
For Dr. Clark, it isn’t a big leap from CME to graduate medical education (GME).
“There is a major link between GME and CME—the commitment to lifelong learning that a physician must be engaged in,” he said.
“I love teaching. It keeps me on my toes,” he added, joking, “I should have been a teacher, not a doctor.”
