(Harrisburg, PA) The Pennsylvania Medical Society is scheduled to testify in front of the U.S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary on Monday, April 9, regarding the recent announcement from Independence Blue Cross and Highmark Blue Cross to merge.
The hearing, titled “The Highmark / Independence Blue Cross Merger: Examining Competition and Choice in Pennsylvania’s Health Insurance Markets,” will be held at 9:30 a.m. in Kirby Auditorium at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia. Pennsylvania Senator Arlen Specter is the ranking committee member.
Representing the Pennsylvania Medical Society will be C. Richard Schott, vice chair of the society’s Board of Trustees, and Roger F. Mecum, chief executive officer.
Testimony given by the Pennsylvania Medical Society will appear at www.pamedsoc.org shortly after the hearing.
Since the merger announcement, the Pennsylvania Medical Society has stated that no merger should move forward until the benefits to patients and health care professionals are well defined. Until that is determined, the Medical Society would closely monitor the proposed merger and articulate concerns.
