Objectives 

Physicians participating in this activity should be able to:

Article 1: Inadvertent Mix-Up of Morphine and Hydromorphone: A Potent Error

  • Describe the analgesic dosing equivalence between morphine and hydromorphone
  • Explain the risks associated with the use of morphine and hydromorphone
  • Identify medication errors that are the result of breakdowns in the use of these medications
  • Suggest methods to improve the safe use of the medications

Article 2: Obstructive Sleep Apnea May Block the Path to a Positive Postoperative Outcome

  • Identify factors that increase the risk of complications in the patient with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)
  • Identify the affects of anesthetics on airway management in the patient with OSA
  • Describe the strategies for pre-, intra-, and postoperative care for the patient with OSA

Article 3: IV Infiltration: Be Alarmed Even When Your Infusion Pump Isn't

  • Identify the mechanisms of infiltration or extravasation events
  • Identify the signs of an infiltration or extravasation occurrence
  • Recognize the role of the occlusion alarm of an infusion pump
