Medical Society Exploring Plans to Help Small Practices with High Cost of EMR

There’s no getting around it—electronic medical record (EMR) software is expensive. Large medical practices and hospitals can use their size to negotiate lower rates, but small medical practices don’t have enough leverage to bargain.

The Pennsylvania Medical Society is exploring plans to use the increased bargaining power of a group of small medical practices to negotiate lower rates for EMR software.

The State Society also is exploring several other health information technology (HIT) projects.

The Society would like to increase its HIT educational offerings through meetings, Webinars, video conferences, podcasts, written materials, and DVDs. Some activities may be eligible for patient safety continuing medical education (CME) credit. It also is interested in developing an online community for members to discuss HIT.
