Poll Finds that 42.6 Percent of Pennsylvanians Have Not Considered Being Organ Donors

A recent poll conducted by the Pennsylvania Medical Society’s Institute for Good Medicine found that only 43.5 percent of Pennsylvania adults are organ donors, while 42.6 percent have not considered being an organ donor.

An additional 37.5 percent said they have considered being a donor but did not feel comfortable, while 19.9 percent said they have considered being a donor but have not gone through with it.

The poll of Pennsylvanians older than 21 had a margin of error of 5.67 percent.

The Institute for Good Medicine conducted the poll to raise awareness of the need for organ donations to coincide with National Donor Day on Feb. 14. According to the federal government, today there are about 98,000 people on the organ donor waiting list

Indicating an interest in being an organ donor on a Pennsylvania driver’s license is easy.

To register online, a resident may visit www.dmv.state.pa.us and select the online services menu, which provides an option to add the organ donor designation. Those who register will receive a confirmation card that they should carry with them until the scheduled renewal of their driver’s license or photo identification card.
