Updated Recommendations for Pregnant Women with Flu

Flu season generally peaks in mid-winter. With that in mind, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has updated its guidelines for treating women who are pregnant or postpartum, including those who have lost a pregnancy.

Pregnant women are at the highest risk of severe complications if they contract the flu during pregnancy or immediately after they deliver.  Alterations in immune, cardiovascular, and respiratory systems increase vulnerability, making antiviral therapy within 48 hours of onset of symptoms a necessity.

The new guidelines were developed by a CDC panel of medical specialists.
