Past Pennsylvania Medical Society (PAMED) President Carol E. Rose, MD, has been elected chair of the state Board of Medicine.
“I feel quite honored to be in this position. I really enjoy the work that I’m doing on the board because I get to look at medicine from a different point of view,” said Dr. Rose.
A four-year member of the board, Dr. Rose will serve a one-year term as chair. She was surprised to be nominated to the post since she had been prepared to nominate chair Ollice Bates Jr., MD, to another term. Dr. Bates declined to run again because his final term on the board will be coming to an end soon.
“I admired how much Dr. Bates allowed all of the members of the Board to have input into the discussions and also recognized the other professionals in the audience on a regular basis. He valued their input when we were discussing their particular profession. I hope I can be as diplomatic as he is,” she said.
As chair, Dr. Rose plans to continue efforts to make the board’s committees more active and encourage more involvement from the other medical professions that the board licenses, which includes physician assistants, nurse midwives, respiratory therapists, and others.
Another big issue during her tenure will be maintenance of licensure, a topic that will be further defined at the Federation of State Medical Board’s (FSMB) next meeting. Just as the specialty boards are concerned with maintenance of qualifications for continued certification, licensing boards are concerned that physicians should demonstrate their qualification for licensure beyond obtaining CME.
Fellow PAMED member Radheshyam M. Agrawal, MD, is the newly elected vice chair of the Board of Medicine and its representative to the FSMB. He is a gastroenterologist at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh.
A board-certified anesthesiologist, Dr. Rose works at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, where she has been on staff since 1990. She also is an associate professor of anesthesiology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.
Dr. Rose served on the PAMED Board of Trustees from 1992 to 2002 and as president of PAMED from October 2000 to October 2001. She earned her medical degree from University of Miami School of Medicine, completing her internship and residency at Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh.
