Governor Signs Perfusionist Licensure Bills

Gov. Ed Rendell has signed two bills into law that establish licensure requirements for perfusionists.

Act 19 and Act 20 of 2008 require perfusionists to be licensed to practice in Pennsylvania and added as members of both the state boards of medicine and osteopathic medicine. On both boards, allied health practitioners share a seat on a rotating basis.

The laws also cover use of ventricular assistance devices by perfusionists and require perfusionists to carry $1 million in medical liability insurance.

The Pennsylvania Medical Society supported Acts 19 and 20 because they will enhance patient safety and health care teams.
