Acupuncture Treatment Bill Heads to Senate

The state House of Representatives has unanimously approved a bill that would allow acupuncturists to treat patients indefinitely only if they do not show signs of a medical condition.

This new requirement would apply only to patients who appear healthy. Those who show signs of a medical condition would continue to need to be diagnosed by a physician.

House Bill 1764 has been sent the bill to the Senate, where it is being considered by the Consumer Protection and Professional Licensure Committee.

The Pennsylvania Medical Society (PAMED) was able to have a critical amendment inserted into the bill before it was approved by the House.

A key provision was reinserted that allows acupuncturists to treat a medical condition for only 60 days before obtaining a diagnosis. The amendment also requires acupuncturists to maintain $1 million in professional liability insurance.
