Objectives 

Physicians participating in this activity should be able to:

Article 1: Insight into Preventing Wrong-Site Surgery 

  • List the three required steps for preventing wrong-site surgery
  • List the two main causes of wrong-site surgery

Article 2: Prompt Identification and Communication of Status May Reduce MRSA Infections

  • Describe the components of an active surveillance program
  • Identify the characteristics of patients at high risk for developing methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections
  • Identify risk reduction strategies that may reduce MRSA infections in a healthcare facility

Article 3: Reducing Complications from Interscalene Blocks

  • Explain which techniques are less likely to be associated with complications of pneumothorax, vertebral artery puncture, or punctures of the epidural or subarachnoid spaces
  • Describe complications of interscalene block (ISB)
  • Specify risk factors for complications associated with ISB
  • Differentiate between which surgical procedures are appropriate for ISB and which are not appropriate for ISB
