Objectives
Physicians participating in this activity should be able to:
Case 1: Who Administers Propofol in Your Organization?
- Explain the debate about who should be credentialed to administer propofol, including views from manufacturers and regulators
- Describe medication errors that have occurred when propofol has been administered by individuals without training in administration of general anesthesia
- Discuss what constitutes safe practice for propofol administration
- Describe strategies healthcare practitioners can use to help promote the safe use of propofol
Case 2: Electrosurgery Safety Issues
- Identify the three elements required to start a surgical fire
- Identify factors that can increase risk of fires or burns related to electrosurgery
- Cite safe practices that can reduce the risk of injury during electrosurgery
Case 3: Hold on to These Orders
- Recognize drugs that are frequently involved in adverse events and near misses involving confusion over hold orders
- Identify the elements of hold orders that can cause confusion
- Cite three things physicians can do to decrease the chance for error in implementing hold orders
