I am receiving an "invalid website security certificate error." What is this?
You may receive an invalid website security certificate error based on your personal browser security settings.
However, the Pennsylvania Medical Society website does maintain a valid certificate from VeriSign. It is safe to click on “Continue to this website” or “Accept this certificate permanently” to go to
www.pamedsoc.org with a secure connection.
How can I tell if I have a secure connection?
In Internet Explorer 7, you will see a lock icon in the Security Status bar on the right side of the Address bar. In Internet Explorer 6 or lower, you will see a lock icon in the Security Status bar in the lower right corner of the browser window.
In Firefox or Netscape, you will see a lock icon in the Status Bar and the Location Bar. The Location bar is on the right side of the Address bar. The Status bar is in the lower right corner of the browser window.
What does it mean when I have both secure and non-secure (mixed) content?
Secure and non-secure content, or mixed content, means that a webpage is trying to display elements using both secure (HTTPS/SSL) and non-secure (HTTP) web server connections.
This is happening on our site because of the logo in our banner—images are generally not made secure and are kept on another web server. Select “Yes” or “Accept this certificate” to continue on our site.
How can I turn off this warning?
If a "Security Warning" appears while using our website, please make the following adjustments to your default settings.
In Internet Explorer, go to the "Tools" menu and select "Internet Options." Select the "Security" tab and then click the "Custom Level" button. Scroll down to "Miscellaneous" and find the "Display Mixed Content" option. Change the setting from "Prompt" to "Enable." Be sure to select the 'OK' button to accept the changes.
In Firefox, go to the "Tools" menu and select "Options." Select the "Security" tab and then click the "Settings" button under "Warning Messages". Uncheck the box next to "I'm about to view an encrypted page that contains some unencrypted information". Be sure to hit OK to save your changes
How do I check a security certificate?
You can take some simple steps to help protect yourself against Internet scams by checking a website's security certificate. When you go to a secure login page, click on the lock icon that appears on your browser to view the security certificate.
It should tell you:
- To whom the security certificate was issued
- Who issued the certificate
- The valid beginning and ending dates
- More detailed information in the “Issuers Statement”
