Past State Society President Focuses on Professionalism
When Peter S. Lund, MD, FACS, became president of the Pennsylvania Medical Society, he wanted to focus on the positives.
Positive things that physicians are doing in their communities.
Positive changes that patients can make to improve their health.
Positive relationships between physicians and patients.
Out of this came the Pennsylvania Medical Society’s Institute for Good Medicine.
Since its launch in October 2007, the Institute has focused on promoting the health and welfare of Pennsylvania patients, reaching out to the community, and promoting medical professionalism.
This includes polling patients on health matters and then providing education on those topics, mentoring young physicians, and giving physicians opportunities to volunteer.
“I think physicians already are doing many of the things that the Institute for Good medicine is promoting. The Institute is trying to celebrate the good efforts that physicians are already doing,” said Dr. Lund, the Society's immediate past president.
The Institute collaborates on projects with a number of other organizations, including the American Cancer Society, American Lung Association, and Drug Free Pennsylvania.
“Stay tuned because the Institute for Good Medicine is a very ambitious program, and I think we’ve already had a dramatic effect on some of the aspects of wellness throughout the state,” Dr. Lund said.
